Black is a popular 18-episode South Korean drama starring Song Seung Heon and Go Ah Ra which aired in 2017. Viu The drama is now getting a Malaysian touch.
In this eight-episode Malay series adaptation, we follow the adventures of Black, a bunian (a supernatural being from Malay folklore) on the hunt for his fugitive partner.
What is Black about?
Black tells the story of a bunian (supernatural being from another dimension) on a mission to track down his fugitive partner in the human world. Breaking a cardinal rule of his people, Black inhabits the body of Malik, a deceased cop, and assumes his identity in order to facilitate his investigation. Despite detesting humans for their ‘primitive ways’, Black becomes entangled with Sofia, a woman whose ability to foresee death is key to his mission. Much to his chagrin, he finds himself falling for her (another cardinal sin). Along the way, they become embroiled in a 20 year old unsolved murder case that leads back to their shared past.
Who are the cast and characters?
Kamal Adli, 33, plays both the cynical Black and honourable Malik. The actor, 33, has been in the business for almost a decade and has appeared in several drama series, movies and even emerged as the champion on the reality comedy show, Super Spontan Superstar 2017.
Aisya, played by Nabila Huda, is Malik’s girlfriend. She is an emergency room doctor with a tragic past — she’s constantly paranoid people will find out about her past. Especially Malik.
Sofia, played by 29-year-old actress Siti Saleha, has the mystical power to see and predict how a person dies. She considers it a terrible burden, and it’s been a struggle for her to lead a normal life or fit in with people.
However, after meeting Black, Sofia she finds a new purpose in her powers when they are used to save lives instead.
Who are the people behind Black?
The series, produced by Kuala Lumpur-based Alpha47 Films, is co-directed by award-winning directors Razaisyam Rashid (of TV series Mandatori fame and movie Pusaka) and Mohd Khairul Azri Mohd Noor (Pekak and a host of music videos for artistes such as Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, Aizat Amdan and Yuna). The script was developed by a team of scriptwriters headed by Bernice Low.
Why should you watch Black?
It’s always a challenge to adapt a popular drama, beloved by many, to something entirely unique. The adaptation has to honour the original material and yet be able to stand apart on its own.
While the mythology of the show may be different, the themes it revolves around remains steadfast: Love, loyalty and honour. Fans would wonder about Black’s mysterious past and whether he and Sofia can have a future together despite coming from such wildly different worlds.
